The JFK "Word of the Week" Program
Each week, grades one and two will have a new word added to their vocabulary; likewise, grades three-five. The purpose of the "Word of the Week" program is to have the students add new words to their written and spoken communication. We will be exposing them to "root" words, prefixes and suffixes as well as word etymology. They will know the meaning, part of speech, and how to use the word in a sentence.
This year, all of our vocabulary word choices come from the book Miss Alaineus, which is about a fifth grade student who has confused "miscellaneous" with a person "Miss Alaineus". The culminating project for our "Words of the Week" program will be a vocabulary parade.
Each month, new vocabulary words will be added to our website, and information will be provided about the word. We strongly encourage you to review these words at home with your children, use them in your conversation, highlight them in books, magazines or newspapers, etc. We hope this program will be highly successful, and any help you can give us from home will be appreciated. Just "click" on the words below to learn more about each new vocabulary item!
